Victor and Thomas had an interesting relationship. To me it seemed that they were almost opposites of eachother and yet they were similar. Thomas was a kind hearted guy, that loved to tell stories. Victor was more of a cold guy and he didn't think to highly of his father. Thomas however really seemed to love Victor's father. When Thomas was still a baby Victor's father saved him from a burning building and as he grew up he was able to make several good memeries with him and he was able to hold onto them.
Victor's father left the reservation when Victor was 12 and never returned. Victor was left with memories of a drunk and abusive father that was now dead. Now both Thomas and Victor have lost their fathers and to Thomas it was like losing his father a second time.
Even though they both know the feeling of loss it seems that Thomas is the one that is able to hold onto the good memories instead of dwelling on the bad ones. When Victor and Thomas find out that it was Victor's father that had started the fire that killed Thomas's family, Thomas wasn't angery or upset about and he still chose to remember the good time he had with Victor's father.
It shows just how much positive thinking can help and I think that Thomas being such a positive person kind of rubbed off on Victor by the end of the movie. Throught the movie their friendship got stronger as they helped each other on their long journey.
Hi Sara,
ReplyDeleteYour point about Thomas' positive perspective on life is great. He chooses to remember positive memories, and when the story isn't to his liking, he creates new stories. The "truths" he chooses to hold on to are telling of his personality and his desires. He wants happy stories, and that's what he chooses to remember.
Victor, on the other hand, can't hold on to anything but the negative memories.
Thanks for your insights.
Take care,
Lauren
Hi Sara - I agree Thomas helped Victor see a more positive side to all his experiences. I think Thomas knew Arnold Joseph accidentally started the fire that killed his parents long before Victor did. I believe Thomas wanted to show Victor why his father really left to Arizona, but he knew it was necessary Victor heard it from someone else.
ReplyDeleteThank you!

(: Hi Sarah,
ReplyDeleteThomas and Victor both knew the feeling of loss, but the only difference is Thomas always looked at things on the positive side. You're right about Thomas looking back at the good memories rather than dwelling on the bad. I believe that this made Thomas a much stronger person versus Victor. Victor was tough on the outside but inside he was torn apart. But I think that trip to Arizona really opened his eyes to see life differently.
