“Coming Home Again” Dialogue

Chang-rae Lee was sent to a boarding school when he was fifteen. At the time his family had thought that it would be the best way to get the best education possible for him. Several years afterwards though he and his mom had this conversation, "'I made mistake.'
'About Exeter?'
'Yes. I made a big mistake. You should be with us for that time. I should have never let you go there.'
'So why did you?' I said.
'Because I didn't know I was going to die.'"

Sending him to boarding school, had been hard for her, but became even harder once she realized that she had lost time that she had wanted to spend with him. This made me think about how short life really is. Almost everyone lives today as if there is a tomorrow. They don't question rather or not tomorrow will come. We figure that if something didn't get done today then it will tomorrow. If we don't see our loved ones today then there will be tons of time for that in the future. However, we don't think about how much we'll regret wasting that time until it's too late.

After reading this short story, I felt reminded that every day is ment to be lived and not wasted because you never know when it'll come to an end forever. It could be in an hour, a minute, a month, a year, or several years, but we all know that at one time it will end. So why not make it worth it while we can, so that we don't have a reget like not being able to spend time with the ones we love.

  1. Hey,
You are right everyday should be lived to the fullest and not waste time. One day were here and another we could be gone. We need to cherish every moment of our lives and do whats best just like Lee's mom did for him. Thats why i said she didnt want to have him see her die

  2. I agree with you. The regret was mainly because she was going to pass and wished that she to advantage of all that time and spent it with her son, rather then him being at boarding school. Your right, life is short. Live everyday like it's your last and maybe then you will have no regrets.
