Chapter 2 in Rules for Writers by Diana Hacker talks about how to write a rough draft. This chapter really stresses writing out your thesis before writing your rough draft. In order to be able to write a theis though, you need to know what makes a good thesis. This chapter mentions a few common mistakes people make when writing a thesis, too fractal, too broad, or too revised. The best way to write a good thesis is to write about one specific topic and to use detail.
The next part to writing a rough draft is writing the body. The body must support the thesis statement. In the body examples are often used to support it. Once the body is written the conclusion is next. The conclusion is what wraps the essay up. In the conclusion the thesis is restated, this however doesn't mean copying and pasting it from the introduction.
How will I use this information? I'll try to write my thesis out first and completely plan my essay and maybe write the body of the essay before the introduction. I have tried doing this before and it never worked well for me before. The next time I try it maybe it'll work out better.
